Making Shofar

This week, the Grade 6 class participated in a 3-day overnight leadership trip to Mansfield Outdoor Education Centre. Activities included a STEM challenge, programming with the ShinShinim and outdoor activities. Perhaps the most unique activity was the production of a shofar in preparation for Rosh Hashanah.

After discussing the significance and role of the shofar, the times at which it is blown during the year and exploring shofarot made from different animals, each student received their own raw goat horn. Students participated in the measuring, cutting and drilling of their shofar in the woodworking shop.

Students also used rasps and sandpaper to smooth and polish their shofarot. Finally, they created a carrying bag for their personal shofar, which they will treasure for many years to come.

This special experience enabled students to gain an understanding of the meaning of the shofar. We look forward to hearing students blowing the tekiah, teruah and shevarim notes throughout the school as we approach the Jewish New Year.
